Her Knight at the Museum by Bryn Donovan book review

Her Knight at the Museum is a charming and unique blend of romance and historical fantasy that was just a really fun read. The story revolves around Emily Porter, a recently divorced conservator at the Art Institute of Chicago, who is tasked with restoring a statue of a medieval knight, Sir Griffin de Beauford. When an unexpected kiss breaks the centuries-old curse binding Griffin to stone, he is brought to life, leading to a hilarious and heartwarming clash of eras. This book is a must-read for anyone who enjoys whimsical romances that blend historical elements with contemporary humor. The delightful dynamic between Emily and Griffin offers a romantic take on love that transcends time, while the comedic scenarios arising from Griffin's bewilderment in the modern world will have you laughing out loud. Donovan's engaging character development and playful dialogue create a vivid escape into a world where magic and romance coexist. Duchess Material by Emily Sullivan book review

In Emily Sullivan's historical romance, Duchess Material, readers are taken on a thrilling journey set in 1890s Britain, where independent bluestocking Phoebe Atkinson must enlist the help of the arrogant Duke of Ellis, William Margrave, after her promising student goes missing. This novel is a delightful blend of romance, intrigue, and social commentary that many readers are sure to enjoy.

Phoebe defies societal expectations by choosing to be a schoolteacher instead of marrying into wealth. Living in a modest flat and dedicating her life to educating working-class girls, she remains undeterred by her unconventional choices. However, when disaster strikes, she has no choice but to reach out to William, her sister's best friend and the powerful duke who once spurned her.

William, who has reluctantly embraced his title, finds himself torn between the expectations of the aristocracy and his lingering feelings for Phoebe. As they navigate the search for her missing student, they both confront their past and the undeniable chemistry that still exists between them. Their banter, mutual respect, and growth as characters are beautifully portrayed, making their reunion a compelling narrative. Sullivan masterfully explores themes of class differences and progressive ideals, presenting Phoebe as a strong, intelligent woman who challenges the status quo. William's journey of self-discovery adds depth to the story, demonstrating the struggle between duty and desire. The chemistry between Phoebe and William is palpable, with moments of tension and spice that keep readers engaged.

Duchess Material is a sweet and spicy romance that balances light-hearted adventure with serious social issues. The plot offers both familiarity and intrigue, with a satisfying resolution that hints at further stories to come. Highly recommended for fans of historical fiction and romance, this book is a delightful read that will brighten your day. I really enjoyed this book!

Book of the Month by Jennifer Probst book review

Sexy time in the Outer Banks. Aspen Lourde is desperate for another bestseller… and she'll go to any length to get it. Even if it means sacrificing her pride to chase the hottest bachelor in town and get him to break her heart… Aspen Lourde can't seem to produce another successful book, and the pressure's on to prove she's not just a one-hit-wonder. Without any fresh romantic turmoil to fuel her pen, Aspen needs inspiration quick enough to create a book her agent can sell to her publisher. So she escapes for the summer to the Outer Banks with a plan to live a story worth writing. Brick Babel is a romance novelist's dream: a local heartthrob with a reputation as wild as the horses running free in the town. He's everything Aspen needs for a muse kickstart—gorgeous, moody, and notoriously unattainable. A good heartbreak is exactly what she needs to meet her deadline and her agent's patience is growing thin.

But Brick refuses to play the game, rejecting all of her advances. When Aspen hears his tour company is on the verge of bankruptcy, she offers him a deal: fake a whirlwind summer romance, then ditch her, drama guaranteed. Desperate to save his grandfather's business, Brick agrees to the ridiculous deal. What starts as a contractual fling spirals out of control as lines blur and real feelings emerge. Brick's falling hard, and Aspen's rethinking her plot twist. The novel might be her ticket back to the top, but at what cost?

Book of the Month delivers an entertaining romance set against the stunning backdrop of North Carolina's Outer Banks. The setting is so beautifully and vividly described that I found myself wanting to pack my bags and visit immediately! Brick, the misunderstood hero, is a standout. The chemistry between Aspen and Brick is undeniable, leading to some steamy moments where Brick's take-charge attitude and dirty talk added spice to their romance. The secondary characters also shine, adding layers of fun, angst, and intrigue to the story. I'm excited to see where the story goes next, especially with Aspen's sister and Brick's best friend gearing up for their own romance in the future. If fake dating, dating the bad boy, small town romance is your thing, definitely pick up this book! I loved it.

One Kiss to Desire by Grace Callaway

This was my first book in the Blackwood Legacy series, so it sounds like I have to go back and read the others. This steamy historical romance features a wounded lord and his disguised housekeeper, packed with humor, heat, and heart. Lord Ethan Harrington, a once-gifted pianist now grappling with an injury, seeks solitude in the quirky village of Chudleigh Bottoms. He hires Xenia Loveday, a resourceful woman running from a troubled past, to manage his home. Their initially tense relationship evolves into a passionate connection as they work together to break a curse that binds them. However, Xenia's hidden secrets threaten their growing love. The story intertwines themes of hidden identities, class differences, and the healing power of love amidst mutual trauma. The dynamics of the Blackwood family are skillfully explored, showcasing their imperfections and deep bond.

Ethan and Xenia's chemistry is captivating; both characters experience personal growth and healing throughout their journey. Their connection is built on mutual support and understanding, making their romance all the more poignant. The inclusion of supernatural elements and local folklore adds an intriguing layer to the plot. The supporting characters, including siblings and a mischievous ghost, enrich the narrative, hinting at future stories. This book is a bit spicy. Xenia is a storyteller and she specializes in naughty stories in a brothel. She is a virgin, so she does not offer “other services.” Her stress about being found out really comes out in the story. Makes you sit on the edge of your seat. This story is fast-paced, filled with humor, emotional depth, and a delightful mix of tension and romance. Grace Callaway's writing is engaging, making this book a fun and spicy read. I highly recommend it for those who enjoy complex characters and a well-crafted love story that leaves you eager for more!

No Ordinary Duchess by Elizabeth Hoyt

Elizabeth Hoyt returns with No Ordinary Duchess, the third installment in her captivating Greycourt Series, offering readers a blend of intense emotions and steamy romance set against a backdrop of family feuds and intrigue. The story introduces us to Lady Elspeth de Moray, the unconventional sister of Julian's childhood best friend, Ran. With a past steeped in tragedy, Elspeth is determined to uncover a manuscript believed to belong to Julian’s family, which sets her on a collision course with Julian Greycourt, the brooding heir to a dukedom.

The chemistry between Elspeth and Julian is electric, enhanced by their contrasting personalities: the sunny, free-spirited Elspeth and the cold, controlled Julian. Their paths continually cross as they pursue their separate quests, leading to moments charged with sexual tension and unexpected intimacy. Hoyt masterfully explores their D/s relationship, showcasing a dynamic that feels both fresh and authentic. It adds a bit of unexpected extra spice. I loved it!!!

The novel is rich with subplots, including threats from assassins and Julian's struggle against his malevolent uncle, Augustus. Yet, it is the romance that remains at the forefront, encapsulating the emotional journey from distrust to passionate love. Hoyt's writing shines as she delves into the raw emotions of her characters, making their connection feel genuine and compelling. With intricate character development and a plot filled with twists, No Ordinary Duchess is a spellbinding read that fans of historical romance will love. The tension and powerful moments throughout the narrative create an immersive experience that keeps readers engaged from start to finish.

For fans who have spent four years waiting for book 3, I can say it does not disappoint. For those who enjoy spicy romance with depth and complexity, this historical romance is a must-read. Dive into the Greycourt Series and lose yourself in this addicting tale!

When a Rogue Meets His Match by Elizabeth Hoyt

Gideon Hawthorne emerges from the gritty depths of St. Giles, a man with a complex past and a rough exterior. Tasked with doing the Duke of Windermere’s dirty work, his primary desires are wealth and the affection of Messalina. The character development in this novel is impressive, keeping readers guessing throughout. Gideon immediately draws readers in with his complex personality and hidden secrets. His interactions with those he employs reveal layers to his character, making his journey all the more compelling.

Messalina Greycourt, now Hawthorne, is a fierce and resilient heroine. Having endured a challenging childhood marked by loss, she presents a strong front. Beneath her tough exterior lies a kind heart, as she learns to navigate her complicated feelings toward her husband. As the story progresses, Messalina's understanding of Gideon’s background and her growth as a character highlight her compassion and strength. Her evolution from loathing to love is beautifully portrayed, showcasing her ability to empathize with those around her.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Kudos to Hoyt for her consistent writing style. Together, Gideon and Messalina create an electrifying dynamic, their fiery chemistry evident in their interactions. Their intimate moments are charged with passion, making them a captivating couple whose journey is both heartwarming and thrilling. Overall, this book is a must-read for fans of historical romance. Highly recommended! The world of Greycourt is one I’m eager to revisit. Here’s to the next installment—I can hardly wait!

Scenic Route by Katie Ruggle

Katie Ruggle’s The Scenic Route is a fast-paced, contemporary romance that takes readers on a thrilling journey through the Rocky Mountains. The story follows Felicity Pax, a bold and fearless bounty hunter, and Bennett Green, a charming private investigator. Their electric chemistry is palpable from the moment they meet, making for an laugh out loud read filled with witty banter and steamy tension.

Felicity is a heroine that readers will root for—independent, adrenaline-seeking, and driven by her mission to track down her estranged mother who has disappeared with a small fortune. Enter Bennett, assigned to shadow her, and the plot quickly thickens. The tension between them builds, making their enemies-to-lovers dynamic incredibly entertaining. Ruggle excels at crafting sharp dialogue that showcases Felicity’s frustration with Bennett, especially as she attempts to shake him off while navigating quirky mountain towns. Ruggle's vivid descriptions of the wild terrain and charming towns bring depth to the narrative, making the characters' journey feel immersive. It is satisfying to see Felicity and Bennett's relationship develop as they face challenges together.

Their chemistry is undeniable, and the tension builds to a satisfying climax. I love how her sisters personalities added to the story. Bennett makes a great book boyfriend! In conclusion, The Scenic Route is a fun, action-packed read filled with humor and romance. With its strong-willed heroine and charismatic hero, this book is sure to entertain fans of romantic comedies. Whether it's Felicity's determination to stay ahead of Bennett or their undeniable chemistry, this is a journey well worth taking. Highly recommended for anyone looking for an enjoyable weekend read!

Not the Duke’s Darling By Elizabeth Hoyt book review

Not the Duke’s Darling was published in 2018 and I picked it up because I saw the third one was coming out soon. Freya de Moray is a captivating character with a complex past. As a member of the secret order of Wise Women and the daughter of disgraced nobility, she has a strong sense of justice and a thirst for revenge against the Duke of Harlowe, the man responsible for her family's downfall. In the story, the Wise Women are being witch hunted by men called Dunkelders.

When Freya and Christopher meet again at a country house party, Freya begins plotting her revenge, not knowing that the Duke is also entangled in his own struggles, including being blackmailed for his late wife's indiscretions. He is also suffering from some PTSD that comes out at different parts of the book. The story unfolds with their intense connection, revealing layers of their past and the secrets that bind them. The development of their relationship from enemies to lovers is engaging and well-paced, making for a gripping read. The dark backstories of the characters add depth to the narrative, and the inclusion of Messalina's perspective enriches the plot, leaving readers eager for her story next. The story delves into deeper themes of trust, forgiveness, and love. The emotional weight of their childhood friendship, fractured by tragedy, adds to the stakes as they navigate their feelings amidst danger and intrigue.

I prefer to read a series book in order as it usually sets things up for the future. The pacing is fast, ensuring there's never a dull moment, there are a few spicy open door scenes that will leave you swooning. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It left me excited for the next installment in the series. Recommended for readers who are looking for a fun historical romance featuring childhood friends, mystery, and a compelling enemies-to-lovers dynamic. I look forward to reading the rest of the series!

Given Our History by Kristyn J. Miller book review

Assistant professor Clara Fernsby is determined and focused on her dream of teaching history. Since the age of fourteen, she has pursued this goal relentlessly, overcoming all obstacles, including a significant relationship from her past. Her hard work pays off when she secures a full time teaching position at a university right after graduating, and she is now up for tenure.

However, everything changes when Theodore "Teddy" Harrison arrives as a visiting scholar for the fall semester. Teddy is a reminder of Clara's past, as they haven’t spoken since a falling out a decade ago. Their shared history at a sleepaway camp in the Blue Ridge Mountains resurfaces, where they exchanged books and music and fell in love as teenagers. At this point, they don’t really know each other anymore.

As they collaborate on a project and share drinks at a college bar, Clara finds herself falling for Teddy once more. Aware of their complicated history, she grapples with the possibility that he may not be interested. Yet, both heart and history have their own interpretations, and Clara is determined not to repeat the past. This novel's dual timelines juxtapose Clara and Teddy's early friendship with their present-day interactions. Readers witness their growth from childhood friends to strangers, and perhaps back to something more. I wanted to jump in and help them with their communication skills!

The characters of Clara and Teddy are compelling and relatable, making the reader root for their romance. The pacing is well-executed, and the emotional depth of their relationship adds to the overall charm of the narrative. The backdrop of academia and the transition from summer to fall amplify the cozy, romantic atmosphere. "Given Our History" is an engaging, heartwarming read that fans of second chance romances will adore. It's a perfect book for fall, and I recommend it for anyone looking for a light, enjoyable escape.

The Worst Duke in London by Amalie Howard book review

This charming enemies-to-lovers Regency romance is a captivating read, crafted by author Amalie Howard. Here's why this book stands out to me:

Strong-Willed Protagonists: Lady Evangeline Raine, a passionate animal lover and feminist, defies societal expectations. Her character showcases resilience and independence, making her a relatable and inspiring heroine.

Engaging Chemistry: The chemistry between Effie and Gage Croft, Duke of Vale, is electric. Their banter is witty and full of tension, creating a delightful dynamic that keeps readers entertained.

Unique Plot: The premise of a fake courtship turns into a steamy and unexpected romance, as Effie and Gage navigate their feelings amidst societal pressures. Their arrangement adds layers of intrigue and excitement to the storyline.

Sex-Positive Representation: This book is refreshingly sex-positive, showcasing both main characters as virgins, which is rare in adult romance. It handles their journey of exploration with sensitivity and authenticity.

Humor and Sarcasm: The humor in the dialogue is sharp and clever, making for a fun reading experience. The characters' straightforwardness and raw honesty add to the charm.

Character Development: Effie's sister, Viola, also experiences growth throughout the story, enriching the narrative with additional layers of familial relationships.

Regency Era Charm: The historical setting is beautifully portrayed, blending romance with progressive themes that resonate well with modern readers.

Stand-Alone Enjoyment: While this is the third book in a series, it can easily be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel, making it accessible for new readers.

Overall, this book is an enchanting read that combines humor, romance, and feminist themes, making it a must-read for fans of historical romance. Highly recommended! I really enjoy Howard’s books and this is not the first one that I have read. There is always a unique twist to the historical aspect that makes it fun and unique.

Maidens of the Cave Lloyd Devereux Richards book review

Maidens of the Cave is the thrilling sequel in the Stone Maidens series by Lloyd Devereux Richards, featuring FBI forensic anthropologist Christine Prusik. This novel is a gritty, well-crafted procedural crime thriller that showcases Christine Prusik’s unconventional approach to solving crimes. Often at odds with her supervisors, she prioritizes justice over office politics, immersing herself in the dark world of a serial killer who targets young women in the caves of Indiana and Illinois. The atmosphere is tense, maintaining a sense of real threat throughout the story. The opening scene, stark in its brutality, sets the tone for the chilling narrative to come. Richards displays impressive technical expertise in his descriptive prose. The writing flows smoothly, drawing readers into the story. The plot is centered around bizarre murder methods and features a significant twist that adds depth to the narrative.

Notably, this book is not a cozy mystery; it includes themes of poisoning, violent murder, and child abuse, which may be triggering for some readers. However, all necessary backstory is provided, making it accessible as a standalone read. Christine Prusik emerges as a relatable protagonist, determined to pursue justice despite bureaucratic obstacles. Her investigation of the deaths of two college students leads her to uncover a sinister pattern, marked by a ring-sized bruise on the victims. The suspense builds as she confronts both the external threat of the killer and her internal struggles.

Overall this is a compelling forensic thriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. It effectively combines action, suspense, and a richly developed plot, making it a must-read for fans of mystery and true crime. I love its engaging characters and unexpected twists. I had both of these books on my nightstand waiting for me to be in a thriller mood. I had to start the second book as soon as I finished the book. I also love the story of how these books came to be published and am a fan of the author on TikTok. Highly recommended!

My Inconvenient Duke by Loretta Chase book review

My Inconvenient Duke wraps up the Difficult Dukes series with a captivating story that centers on Lady Alice Ancaster and Giles, the Duke of Blackwood. Having known each other for 15 years, their relationship is filled with a mixture of deep-seated affection and tension, creating a slow-burn romance that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Alice, determined to protect herself from her brother Hugh's reckless behavior and his friends' notorious antics, sets out to find a suitable husband. Blackwood, who secretly harbors feelings for Alice, decides to intervene, leading to a series of adventures that redefine their relationship. Their chemistry is palpable, and the way they navigate their past regrets while forging a future together is well written.

Chase's writing style shines through, with witty dialogue and well-rounded characters that kept me engaged from start to finish. The tension between Alice and Blackwood simmers as they confront their feelings amidst the chaos of their lives. The exploration of their relationship, not just leading up to marriage but beyond, is frustrating - but fun and engaging because the author added a lot of drama. Their journey toward understanding and supporting each other makes for a satisfying read. What sets this story apart is Chase's decision to use multiple points of view. This technique adds depth and complexity, allowing readers to connect with not just Alice and Blackwood, but also the motivations of the antagonist. The insights we gain from other characters enhance our understanding of the protagonists' struggles and desires, making their eventual union all the more meaningful.

My Inconvenient Duke is a tale of love, adventure, and personal growth that defies societal expectations. With this book, Chase proves once again that she knows how to weave a story that is both heartwarming and thrilling. I highly recommend this book to fans of historical romance.  Thanks to NetGalley and Avon books for an ARC of this book.  The publication date is set for January 21, 2025.

Good Duke Gone Wild by Bethany Bennett book review

Dorian Whitaker, the Duke of Holland, finds himself in need of an heir after his disastrous marriage. When he hires Caroline Danvers, a captivating bookseller tasked with liquidating his late wife's library. She uncovers love letters that lead to a mystery entwined with their growing attraction. Caroline, who secretly writes erotic novels under the pen name Blanche Clementine, risks her reputation and her family's bookshop by getting involved with Dorian. I think this is the unique twist to this book as the different classes and taboo occupation at the center of this romance unfold. As they delve into Dorian's troubled past, the undeniable chemistry between them challenges them to rewrite their own story, merging fantasy with reality.

Bethany Bennett's storytelling immerses readers in a world filled with relatable characters and rich emotional depth. Caroline and Dorian's experiences add complexity to their relationship, making their connection both genuine and compelling. The supporting characters, particularly Caroline's cousins, provide humor and heart, enhancing the narrative. While the plot includes a variety of subplots that are fun, the central romance remains engaging and heartfelt. This book is a delightful blend of wit, romance, and suspense, making it a must-read for fans of Historical Romance. The cover is beautiful. Highly recommended for anyone who loves vibrant characters and an engaging story!

The Mistress Experience by Scarlett Peckham book review

In "The Mistress Experience," Scarlett Peckham delivers a unique historical romance that captivates with its blend of humor, warmth, and genuine emotion. The story revolves around Thaïs Magdalene, London's most infamous courtesan, who auctions herself off for a month to raise funds for women's rights. Some of her dialogue will make you laugh out loud and blush. The unexpected twist comes when Lord Alastair Eden, a perfectionist earl and aspiring politician, becomes the highest bidder, seeking to learn the art of pleasing a future wife. Their journey through physical intimacy and emotional connection is both engaging and relatable, making it difficult to put the book down. Peckham’s writing style shines as she crafts a narrative filled with depth and character development. Thaïs and Alastair's relationship is unusual for the time period, showcasing the complexities of love, desire, and personal growth. The witty exchanges and tender moments truly highlight their chemistry. While the series concludes with "The Mistress Experience," the impact of Thaïs and Alastair's story lingers, leaving readers eager for more from Peckham. It’s a bit of a slow burn book, with few spicy scenes. This book is a joyful and fun read that stands out as a memorable addition to the conclusion of this series. I did read this series in order and it’s nice to see some of the names reappear. It makes sense for the continuity, but it could be a stand alone. I LOVE the cover. It has that great vintage look.

Hot Earl Summer by Erica Ridley book review

This was an unexpectedly fun and ridiculous ride (in a good way). This is a historical romance with a delightfully quirky, nerdy couple. I am not sure how I missed out on the previous books of this series, but I have to go back and read them all. I jumped into book #5 and loved all the characters! The Wynchesters are siblings, found family and are investigators in Victorian England. Sword-wielding Elizabeth is a bit rough around the edges, but an excellent fighter. She does have an issue with her joints, but throughout the story readers will see how she copes.

Elizabeth is tasked with finding a will for a castle that was supposed to be an orphanage and school. The Earl lost the castle in a card game after his mother’s death, but the will needs to be found so that the wager will be invalid. Elizabeth arrives at the castle to find that the Earl has fled and the castle is occupied by his inventor cousin. He has the place booby-trapped because his neighbor is trying to seize the castle. Between Elizabeth's sword fighting and Stephen’s machines, they are going to try to hold off the invasion (for which tickets were sold!). As they get to know each other, they find they are perfect for each other. The writing is funny and the situations are crazy at times, but this makes for a very entertaining read. I love how Stephen tries to accommodate Elizabeth, without knowing the whole story. Swoon. Lots of action and comedy in this book. A definite series to add to your TBR pile.

Dark Olympus #7: Dark Restraint Katee Robert book review

I’ve read every book in the Dark Olympus series and it’s impossible to stop! This new book, Dark Restraint, is the story of Ariadne and the Minotaur. It is definitely darker than I usually read, but if you want a retelling of Greek mythology in a modern setting and looking for some smut, this series is for you. It’s truly addictive. By book 7, the complexity of the political situation is well underway. Society, murder, backstabbing, survival, assassins, sex, betrayal, secrets and deception continue in this story. Ariadne has been handled and manipulated by her father all her life. He has not been nice to her and her focus has been on survival. The Minotaur has been obsessed with her and loves her as best he can. He has been assigned to kill her, but he has his own plans. He is a different person with her, even though he has seen and caused more violence in his life then most. He was always looking out for her. They are taking a big risk by being together. But the sexual tension is there and is HOT. There are some dark elements to this story, just like all the others. I do feel like all the characters get their HEAs in a way that is good for them. The twists and turns keep this story going and I could not put it down.

Viscount in Love by Eloisa James book review

Eloisa James is one of my favorite authors and I pretty much love anything she writes :) This book was a great start to a new series called Accidental Brides. That was all I needed to be sucked in. The story starts out pretty complicated and just gets more delicious as it goes on. Viscount Dominic Kelbourne is been engaged for two years to Lenora Sutton, who he feels has the right background for him. She is educated in the right things, she says and does the right things, she fits right into society. Her sister, Victoria (Torie), has a secret crush on him because he is quite handsome. One day, Dom inherits his sister’s twins unexpectedly and doesn’t know how to deal with them. Torie volunteers to spend time with them and she finds that she really likes them. They are obsessed with death and very bright. Everyone else does not understand them at all. The unexpected happens and Lenora elopes, shocking everyone. Especially Dom. He needs to be married quickly and starts to think that Torie will make an acceptable wife/nanny. When they kiss and the feelings are off the charts. Torie wants to marry for love, but knows her chances are slim because she is not the perfect wife. In fact, she is dyslexic and is bullied by society for it. However, she is a very talented artist and as Dom gets to know her, he starts to realize how brilliant she actually is. Readers will start to see that Dom and Torie might actually be falling in love and the marriage will turn into something more than a practical one. I enjoyed the quirkiness of the characters and the development of a loving relationship. The dialogue is fun. The situations are unique. I also love how the author describes Dom’s physical attributes. Hellooooo sexy book boyfriend…

This book just recently came out and I highly recommend it for your next historical romance. It will suck you in and you won’t be able to put it down until you finish it.

How to Fall for a Scoundrel by Kate Bateman book review

I love everything that Kate Bateman writes and this book did not disappoint. This book is part of Her Majesty’s Rebels series and this is the story between Eleanor Law and Henri Bonheur (or Harry). Ellie and Harry meet under the mistletoe, share a quick kiss and then end up having to be professionally associated. At first glance, Harry seems to be a conman and possible reformed criminal. He uses a lot of aliases and Ellie doesn’t know which one is the real him. He does come to the rescue of Ellie’s and her friends by posing as Charles King from King & Co. London’s most successful private investigation form.

I am a huge fan of spy/investigative/mystery historical romances. The chemistry between the main characters was sizzling. It turns out that Harry has a mystery of his own and it’s possible that Ellie and her friends can help him. As they uncover his mystery, Ellie and Harry have to face their undeniable attraction. All the characters are charming. I love the funny, witty and fast paced dialogues. There is enough suspense to keep you reading until the end. So, just be prepared to settle in with this book. You will have to finish even if you have to read it until 3am (speaking from experience). I love the friendships between the women and I kept cheering Harry on as he built up Ellie’s confidence in herself. A great read! A definite add to your TBR pile.

This book will be released August 20, 2024. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

The Lady Plays with Fire by Susanna Craig book review

I jumped right into book #2 of this series without realizing it. I was totally sucked into the book by the series title, Goode’s Guide to Misconduct. I mean, who wouldn’t like that in a historical romance? Our two main characters are Julia Addison, who is the daughter of a clergyman, a lady’s companion and an anonymous play reviewer in London. Graham McKay, Earl of Dunstan, aka Blackadder is a playwright. The Earl is a patron of plays and Blackadder write the plays. Blackadder is a harsh critic of people and the ton in his plays, but people pack the stands to see what outrageous things will happen on stage. The Earl delights in reading the reviews, until the one Julia writes in Mrs. Goode’s Magazine for Misses.

Right away the reader can see that Julia and Graham are the perfect match because they are both writers and they enjoy theatre. They both have a lot of societal issues to deal with. And they both need to earn a living. Graham uses a pen name because members of the aristocracy are not supposed to work. Julia uses a pen name because women are not supposed to be writers. They are both intrigued by each other and little do they know they are trying to uncover each other’s secret identities. The Lady Plays with Fire is a well written historical romance with a fun plot and a sexy romance. The chemistry between the characters does not disappoint. There is some humor, some drama, good friendships and strong women. There is a lot of witty word play and a bit of a slow burn. But they definitely get to the spice. If you happen to be a theatre buff, you will love the story even more. This is a sexy enemies to lovers story. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

Kilt Trip by Alexandra Kiley book review

This book is a contemporary romance that takes place in Scotland. Addie Macrae is a travel company consultant from the US. She is working for what seems like a start up and is very loyal to her boss. As a consultant, Addie is looking at the bottom line and advising tour companies on how to make a profit. She gets sent to Scotland by her boss and kind of goes undercover by signing up for the tour before her consulting job starts. She gets a little lost and turned around, but finally meets up with the tour group and their hot and sexy guide, Logan Sutherland. Logan believes that a tour guide should take people to out of the way places they might not find on their own. He also likes to talk about the history and tell personal stories about these places. He is also a big supporter of local small business owners and as the tour ends, he takes people to a pub run by his friend. He treats people like family and wants them to leave Scotland with good memories. Addie is the last one to leave the pub and she is definitely charmed by Logan. *swoon*

The next morning Addie is all business as she shows up at the family owned tour company and didn’t expect Logan to be there as one of the owners. They butt heads right from the start. Addie and Logan’s father want the business to stay afloat and be profitable. Logan refuses to hear about the tourist trap tours that Addie pitches. He wants to give customers a unique and custom experience. You can see where the tension comes in with all of the above. However, Addie and Logan have undeniable chemistry and things heat up between them. They both have a lot of thinking to do about how they resolve their personal issues, job issues and find what it means to be “home.” I love the setting of this book. I think the author captured the heart of Scotland. She acknowledged both the touristy side of Scotland, along with the out of the way historical aspects and day to day life. I fully appreciate the hot man in a kilt and Logan used it to his advantage. This book is a fun and sexy romance. Perfect to take with you on any travels, the beach or an evening at home. There is some drama (but there has to be) before the happily after ever. I think there was a lot of depth to the main characters, but also to the secondary characters were well developed. A definite must read that will make your heart melt.

Swap and Smell the Roses by Karen Booth book review

This book was a fun small town romance. Main character, Willow, agrees to swap her NY city apartment with her best friend’s cottage rental in Connecticut. Bailey, the best friend, forgets to give Willow the keys and she has to as the grumpy landlord for a spare key. Reid is the grumpy landlord, doesn’t talk much, but is hot. I feel like their chemistry sparked right away, but Reid stubbornly held out because he is not up for meeting people or any entanglements whatsoever. The cottage that Willow is staying is a bit dated and she accidentally floods her space while doing laundry. This forces her to move into the big house with Reid. Both Reid and Willow are working to get over some grief and hardships. Willow is ready to give up on her music career, even though she is really talented. She gets a temporary job in a local bakery and quickly works her way into town life. Reid is the opposite. He returned home after suffering from burnout as a famous chef. He never wants to cook again and has been avoiding everyone from town.

I loved both the characters. Willow is hard working and funny. Reid is hard working and grumpy on the surface. He seems to initially be annoyed by Willow’s spunk, but in reality she was really working through the emotional wall he built up. I like their interactions at the farmer’s market. I loved how Reid supported Willow. Readers will not be disappointed once their attraction finally explodes into something more. I was waiting for the spice and the author delivered! You’ll find yourself rooting for them and a happily ever after. It’s a fun quick read that will pull you in. Perfect for a relaxing weekend or a beach read. I thought the cover was really pretty. It reflected Willow’s city life and Reid’s passion for gardening. Super cute!

Finding Mr. Write by Kelley Armstrong book review

As a fan of Kelley Armstrong’s YA books, I was looking forward to this one. I really enjoyed the author’s note in explaining that it was her first rom com and how it was inspired. It made me like the book even more. The main female character is Daphne McFadden. She is an architect who just built her off-grid dream home in the Yukon. She is dealing with multiple losses. She was inspired to write the book, but an agent would not pick it up. Daphne decides to submit the book with a male pen name and all of a sudden she is on the bestseller list! Daphne and her lawyer friend, Nia, concoct a plan to invent a man to fit her pen name. Enter Chris Stanton, a hot accountant, smart, sexy and a bit nerdy. He takes on the Chris Ainsworth persona as his stage/actor personality to play Zane Remington, the male author Daphne invented. These twists and turns add some humor to the story. As Daphne’s book keeps climbing the bestseller list, she now finds that “Zane” has book festivals, interviews, speeches, signings and a book tour. All this turns into a forced proximity, slow burn romance as Chris and Daphne travel together. Things definitely get complicated. There are secrets, coverups and even a bit of blackmail. Things get pretty spicy as they admit their feelings for each other and figure out what the future holds for them.

I’ll admit that as I was reading this, I wondered how much of the publishing industry insight was true. How many women use male pen names to get published? I think the author had some fun with what might happen if that pen name situation spiraled out of control. I think both characters were well developed and the chemistry grew as they got to know each other. But the spark was there with physical attraction from the beginning. I like that the chapters alternated between Daphne and Chris narrating. The setting is fun, the hookups are steamy and the HEA makes me happy. All the things I want in a contemporary romance. This book comes out June 25, 2024. It’s a great addition to your TBR pile and a great weekend escape. Oh, and I LOVE the punny title!

Earl’s Trip by Jenny Holiday book review

As you can tell by the title, this story follows three best friends on their annual September holiday to the country. Archibald Fielding-Burton, Archie to his friends, and also the Earl of Harcourt is very much looking forward to this year’s trip. He has a lot to talk about to his friends and is ready to blow off some steam. Simon and Effie are the two other men on this trip. They get interrupted by Clementine and Olive’s father, who is worried about his daughters. The Morgan sisters end up on this men’s trip and hilarity ensues. Clementine Morgan has been Archie’s friend since they were little. They have not seen each other in a while. Clementine is a bit of a wild child and is currently opposed to marriage. Olive was about to be married off, but she was realizing too late that he was not the right man for her. This is definitely a great friends to lovers romance. I love that Clementine and Archie were so competitive in different things. I also really like that Clementine loved her sister and Archie really loved his friends. The fact they have an annual trip planned is really sweet. An interesting twist in the story was that Clementine was a vegetarian, which usually does not show up in historical romances and it was nicely woven into the story. This was just such a fun story. There were some sad aspects to what the individual characters were personally dealing with, but it just added to the depth of the story. I loved all the characters. This book is definitely worth reading. Perfect weeknight or weekend escape.

The Trouble with Inventing a Viscount by Vivienne Lorret book review

This is the second book in the Liars’ Club and the story of Honoria Hartley and Oscar Flint. Honoria is an expert makeup artist, which comes in handy in her thespian family who is always putting performances on their family stage. Honoria was somewhat betrothed by her grandmother in a letter to Viscount Vandemere, who has been missing for years and presumed dead. However, Honoria uses it as an excuse to avoid other marriage proposals and pursue her path to freedom as a single woman. Unfortunately, her penchant for gambling gets her into some trouble in Paris as she wins the money Oscar needs to pay off his debts. He hears about her Vandemere scheme and shows up at her doorstep as the long lost Viscount Vandemere. She knows he’s lying and is a con artist, but they both play along because he needs the money and she needs her secrets kept. He does move into “his” house that is filled with Vandemere relatives sponging off the estate. They are pretty sure he is lying, but there are some family secrets and no one can be totally sure. Oscar is in his own way an honest thief. He steals money out of necessity and only from the wealthy that have wronged others. There are lots of funny scenes. Honoria and Oscar are always trying to one-up each other and from that their attraction starts to grow. This is definitely a zany, quirky book that is just a lot of fun to read. There are a lot of laugh out loud moments. I really like that Honoria has a huge family that is all up in her business and Oscar has been on his own for a while now. This book is a bit of a slow burn, but there are sparks and when they finally act on their feelings it gets steamy. Honoria has met her match and it makes for a delightful read. Put this book on your TBR and get ready for its release on September 24, 2024. Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC.

Lady Scandal by Laura Lee Guhrke

Ohhhhh…this was a delightful romp through scandal and sexy times. Delia Stratham is a Countess who has been widowed three times. She is now a party planner at the Savoy, one of London’s nicest hotels. Viscount Simon Hayden shows up one day as Delia’s new boss and is revamping business practices and secretly investigating embezzlement. It’s unusual for Delia to be working because she is a rich lady. However, she does it to be social, to not live alone in a big house and to have something to occupy her time. Simon comes from a poor background and feels like an outsider with his new newly acquired title. They are both committed to their jobs and what is best for the hotel. Secrets are uncovered as the investigation progresses and even Delia has to admit that the hotel profits should be more than they are. Simon is very particular about not mixing business with pleasure. Delia doesn’t care as much because no one is paying attention to a widow. She can be as scandalous as she wants. Their attraction definitely heats up. Simon cannot resist Delia and goes against his better judgment. Will their attraction to each other be enough to sustain a relationship? I love their conversations. Their intellect is on the same level and leads to some funny quips. Delia is like a social butterfly and Simon is more straight laced and up tight (at first) He is usually pretty confident with his business decisions, but Delia has him thinking twice with his approach to some things. This is a super fun, engrossing read. A definite must for any historical romance fan. This book is out June 18, 2024. I chose to read this ARC on Netgalley.

His Scandalous Lessons by Katrina Kendrick book review

A notorious rogue and a politician’s daughter? Yes, please! Anne Sheffield acts as her father’s secretary as he wheels and deals as a member of Parliament. She has a photographic memory which allows her to blend into the background and benefits her intelligence gathering. However, her father never lets her out of his sight because of the secrets she keeps. She has decided to take control of her life and goes to Richard Grey, rogue and member of Parliament” on the opposite end of the political spectrum as her father. Trust does not come easily to either Anne or Richard, but Anne promises to turn over secrets in return for help with society and relationship “lessons” and some husband hunting. Anne is desperate and at this point, marrying any man would be better than staying at home with her abusive father. As one would expect, sparks fly between Anne and Richard as they spend time with each other and get to know each other. Richard might make some morally gray choices as a politician, but his heart is in the right place, making him a perfect match for Anne. I was not expecting the darkness of some of the secondary characters, but it definitely added to the urgency and mystery of the story and why Anne had to get out of the situation she was in. I love seeing strong and smart women in historical romances. The physical relationship was a bit of a slow burn, but when it got there…holy HOT! This was a good read. I read it late into the night because I just had to see how it ended. A great weekend read!

Her Adventures in Temptation by Megan Frampton book review

I’m a big fan of Megan Frampton books. I read the first book in this series, somehow missed the second one and jumped right into the third. I love this series as the main female characters are super smart in nontraditional subjects. In this story, Myrtle is a brilliant mathematician who wants to start her own business helping other women invest and manage finances. Myrtle herself was very wealthy, but her brother managed her money. As the story started, Myrtle had been proposed to 32 times and rejected them all. Her brother, Viscount Leybourne was very aggravated by her actions and just did not understand her perspective. Simeon Jones is an artist with the reputation of a rake. In reality Simeon had a soft heart and tried to help when he could. Unfortunately, he was poor enough that he kept it a secret from his closest friends. In the opening scenes, he took a commission to paint someone and through various twists and turns, turned into complete mayhem. Myrtle talks Simeon into a business proposition which includes paying him to get her to London as fast as possible. To make this happen, they have to fake a marriage so they can travel together. Their banter throughout these negotiations is smart and funny. This is a bit of a slow burn romance, but super sexy and I found myself rooting for them the whole time. I thought that with their different interests they would not have much in common, but opposites definitely do attract in this story. Simeon took a risk by traveling with a lady and she took a risk by being with an illegitimate artist. Myrtle is a bit awkward in society and Simeon is as smooth as they come. This story is sexy, witty, fun, intelligent and an overall great read. It’s hard to put down once you start reading. It’s also hard not to get sucked in by the gorgeous violet themed cover. *fans self*

Any Duke in a Storm by Amalie Howard

This book was full of twists for me. First, I did not know it was part of the series and I have not read the other ones. It definitely reads as a stand alone. I’m also not usually a fan of the high seas and pirates, but the cover sucked me in. I do love all things Victorian (which is why the cover spoke to me) and I like how that all came together in the book in terms of being away from England. I thought Lady Lisbeth was totally kick ass. I mean, there are not a lot of stories with the female main character getting into sword fights. Raphael Saint is a great name for a sexy captain. He is also a French Duke. There is some forced proximity going on in this book. The sexual tension is off the charts and Raphael falls first. He has to work on the wooing. Their conversations are funny and witty. Trust becomes a part of the equation (which makes it super swoony). Some of the secondary characters really stand out. One of them being Narina, who is an orphan, growing up around sailors/smugglers. Her vocabulary is laugh out loud. It would not be great in real life, but it’s fun in a fiction story. There are elements of biracial characters and a few light sexual kinks brought up in this story. I appreciate that it is not preachy, but nicely woven into the story. I think the author did a lot of research about the setting and how smuggling worked during that time so it gives the reader a more authentic feel for what the Caribbean might have been like during that time period. The end is exciting and twisty. I really liked the book and highly recommend it. Especially if you are looking for a historical romance that is slightly different. This would make for a perfect Spring Break read!

In Want of a Viscount by Lorraine Heath book review

Oh…yum…was this ever a good book!!! This is the third (and last) book in this series. I am always a fan of reading them in order, but this could be read as a stand alone. Leonora Garrison has traveled to England with her brother and mother to find investors for their company and an invention that Leonora is particularly fond of. In reality, her mother is more interested in finding her daughter a husband and her brother could not manage the business without her. Viscount Wyeth (our sexy book boyfriend in this book), or Rook, is always interested in a good investment and is willing to listen to the two Americans. Rook tries to walk the straight and narrow path because he is driven to be the opposite of this father. As the story moves forward, the author keeps giving us insight of what a horrible person the previous Viscount was. Rook still cleans up the mess his father left, especially with the many illegitimate children he has spread out throughout London.

However, Rook finds that the walls he has put up around his feelings and emotions are not there when he is around Leonora. They just “happen” to meet in a pleasure club for women. A super sexy, steamy kiss happens almost at the very beginning of the story – teasing the reader for more explicit scenes that will follow ;) They truly have the best kind of chemistry between them. Lorraine Heath is just really good at matching the perfect couple and writing swoony scenes. Leonora’s difficulties with a relationship is that she is an American and she is trying to run and rescue her father’s business. She is not given the credit she is due for being a successful business woman and Rook is the one who realizes just how astute she is, as both an inventor and a business woman. The banter between them is fun to read. There is just enough action and anticipation in this story to keep you reading until you are finished. This book came out Feb 20, 2024 - so it is still a month new and and worth putting in your TBR right now!

Never Blow a Kiss by Lindsay Lovise book review

This is the first book Secret Society of Governess Spies series. I mean, that is quite the hook right there! Emily Leverton is the female main character and she has just started a new job as a governess, with a bit of spying on the side. She is worried about the governess part of the job because she does not have the best education herself and she has to wing things a bit. She is bold one evening and blows a kiss towards Zachariah Denholm, a ex-solider turned railroad magnate. To be fair, Emily did not know who he was, just that he was handsome (how fun is that?). Turns out that Emily caught Zach’s eye and he tracked her down. The conversation between them is just really funny and I caught myself laughing out loud a few times. Later, Emily finds herself in a dangerous situation and it just happens that Zach is there. As a part time investigator, he turns up a lot.

The flirting between them is just delightful and the chemistry is scorching. Oh man! It was sooooo hot. As the story goes on we start to find out that Emily has a bit of trauma in her life and Zach is working really hard to get past her defenses. They write letters to each other that are a hoot to read. As a mystery begins to unfold, Emily and Zach work together because of mutual interests. Of course, their feelings start to develop and as they find themselves alone together and the physical attraction is explored. ;) This is a funny, well written book that was just a lot of fun to read. It was one of those that sucked me in and I could not stop until I was finished. I love how these two characters are not born into the ton, but they make their way into society because of their cleverness and their business smarts. The cover art is beautiful. I love when ballgowns are incorporated into the cover. This book came out in January and it is totally worth buying yourself a copy. It is a delight to read!
