Secret Investigation by Elizabeth Heiter book review

This is the second book in a planned four book series within the Tactical Crime Division (TCD). I totally read them out of order. I still need to order the first one, then I read the third one and now I read the second one. So, I guess they can be read as stand-alone and totally make sense...but I normally choose to read them in order. Somewhere along the way, I was not paying attention. I was particularly looking forward to this one because I enjoy Elizabeth Heiter’s Harlequin Intrigue books. Her books got me hooked on Romantic Suspense and now here we are…

This fast-paced book will hook you from the first page and you won’t be able to put it down until the end. Leila is the CEO of Petrov Armor and she is being investigated for selling faulty body armor to soldiers *gasp*. Leila is a young CEO of such a large company, so she feels like she constantly has to prove herself and this incident is not helping matters. Leila is willing to let Agent Davis Rogers go undercover and investigate whether or not the faulty armor is really from her company. Things are pretty personal for Davis because one of his close friends died from the faulty armor. The immediate attraction to Leila creates a lot of conflicting feelings on both sides.

Leila is sure it cannot be anyone at her company that is responsible for the faulty, but she lets Davis investigate. She is also doing her own investigation. Cracks start to appear within the company’s ranks and the intrigue is definitely climbing. The mystery and action is definitely exciting and the romance brewing between our two protagonists is believable and exciting. Readers will find themselves rooting for Leila and Davis. This is definitely a great addition to the series. You will probably want to end up reading all four of the books.

And it has an amazing series trailer!

Immortal Angel by Lyndsay Sands book review

Ahhhh...the Argeneau world is like coming back to an old friend. I can’t even remember how long I have been reading Lyndsay Sands books, but they sure do make for a fun and romantic escape. Well, at least while the couple’s story is being told. I guess some of the storylines have some bloody scenes. 😂 I do love that Sands gives her characters equal opportunity. In this particular story, Ildaria Garcia is a kick-ass vigilante when it comes to helping women fight off their male attackers. Her actions do draw the attention of Lucian, so she is reluctantly forced to move to Toronto and has been given a stern warning about beating men up. Ildaria is settling into her new life and she is savoring it because she has been on the run for 200 years and is tired of it. She is going to school for an accounting degree and because of that, agrees to do bookkeeping for Joshua James Simpson Guiscard, aka G.G.. G.G. is a sexy mortal who operates an immortal bar. His parents are both immortal, so that is why he is accepted. Since they are our two main protagonists, you can guess that they are life mates. The problem in this coupling is that G.G. does not want to become immortal. He witnessed his mother’s transformation and has been scarred by that childhood memory. His mom has not been able to convince her son otherwise.

As we delve deeper into Ildaria’s past, we learn a lot about the experiences that shaped who she is today. I think it is pretty powerful that G.G recommended counseling before they got intimate to help Ildaria move forward from her past trauma. Also, helllloooooo steamy sex scenes with my favorite paranormal twist. Lucian cracks me up. It’s not that he is trying to be funny, but being one of the oldest immortals, he just doesn’t do small talk and other socially appropriate things. He sure is blunt and no-nonsense. Sometimes those scenes make me want to reread Lucian’s story. The resolutions are satisfying and I hope there are tidbits about how they are doing in future books. I love this world that Sands has built. I love all the character names...the best names can be found in this series. Anytime she has a book release day, I am nowhere to be found, enjoying my escape in the newest storyline.

Temper by Chantal Fernando Book Review + Excerpt - Blog Tour!!!

I totally dove into something new with this book → I have never read a Motorcycle Club book 🤯, didn’t know I was starting with book three, AND this is also my first book by Chantal Fernando. A lot of firsts here :) It was a whole new world to explore.

Temper is our male protagonist and he is the current president of the Knights of Fury MC. I would say the name suits him because his family was well acquainted with his temper when things did not go his way. Our female protagonist is Abbie. She works at her family dive bar in Nevada called Frank’s. She had gradually taken on more responsibility at the bar, putting off her own needs and education to keep her family afloat. The first time Temper met Abbie, he asked her out and she turned him down. She continued to turn him down every time they came through town until one night, she finally agreed. The date was soooooo romantic and perfect. Abbie was kind of rethinking all the scary things she had heard about the Knights of Fury. Until a thing happens, and the suspense goes off the charts. Suffice it to say that Abbie was now unwillingly under the club’s protection. One can only be mad for so long with the chemistry that was brewing between Temper and Abbie. She has a choice to embrace her new life or go back to what she had.

This really is a fun story. Lots of action, suspense, some plot twists and a whole lot of sexy. I don’t think you will be able to put the book down until you finish the story. I love how the others portrayed Temper and his grumpy attitude before Abbie came into his life. I also love how Abbie becomes more of a risk-taker in her own life and starts living what she has really been wanting. The sense of family really grabs you in this story. I mean, isn’t that something we all want?

The dialogue flows between all the characters. The setting has a lot of details and brings you into the story. As I was reading this, I thought that Chantal Fernando has a writing style like Rhenna Morgan (so if you are a fan of either, you will like all the books). Both their characters walk the gray line when it comes to the law, but they do right by the people they are loyal to. There is a lot of bad in the world and sometimes you have to make tough choices. Definitely character traits of strong, sexy men. I will be picking up books 1 and 2 of this series. It was so good and now I think I am hooked on MC romance books.

TEMPER by Chantal Fernando Excerpt

It’s been a while since I’ve seen [Temper], and he looks good. It’s like the man doesn’t age. He’s tall, strong, and kind of mean looking, but he’s been nothing but nice and respectful toward me. We kind of have a routine going every time we see each other. We chat, we flirt, he asks if he can buy me dinner, and I say no. He accepts that and leaves, until next time.

I don’t know why I always say no anymore. The first time was a combination of him being a biker and feeling so much older than me. But the age thing doesn’t bother me that much anymore. Truth is I’ve never said yes, to any man, to any date. I get asked out by people coming into the bar, but you don’t have to be experienced to know what they are really looking for, and it’s not a loving, long-lasting relationship. My experience is severely lacking, aside from prom and the mistake I made after it, and there’s no saving me now. I’m going to be a spinster. Hopefully Ivy will give me some nieces and nephews I can claim as my own.
Temper places money on the table, with a huge tip, like he always does. “Seriously? Who tips that much?”
His lip twitches. “You can take yourself out to a nice dinner with it, since I know you’re never going to let me take you out.”
“You giving up that easily?” I tease, giving him a flirtatious smile. I don’t know where this sudden boldness is coming from, other than the fact that I don’t want him to stop asking me out, and I’ve only just realized this.
I’ve never met another man like Temper, and I don’t think I ever will. I see how people treat him, avoid him, and make sure not to challenge him. Hell, my own mother warned me to be friendly with him, but never too friendly. He has this air of menace about him, but over the years I’ve also seen how he treats his MC brothers like family, and he’s always respectful, even to the people who work here. I’ve seen him vulnerable when he talked about his Prez… Hammer was his name, I think. He’s never rude, or arrogant—to me, anyway—and he’s always generous and polite. When he speaks to me, he always uses a humble, gentle tone, one that I’ve come to enjoy listening to. I know there is another side to him, and I can’t help but want to get to know that more.

“It only took a few years of rejection,” he jokes, lifting the whiskey glass to his lips. I don’t think I’ve ever heard him make a joke before.
“Maybe this was the year I was going to say yes,” I reply, clearing my throat. I don’t know what’s come over me, but I have the feeling like if I truly do want to take a chance and go on this date, it’s now or never. I’m stuck here, in the same job, doing the same thing every damn day, and I deserve to have a little fun and do something reckless for once in my life. I’ve always been the good girl, the trusted daughter, and the responsible older sister, taking care of my family as much as I can, since my dad has never been around. I know his name, Cohen Pierce, and that he lives in California somewhere. But he wanted, and still wants, nothing to do with me, and that’s fine. I’ve accepted that.
But what have I ever done for me? Other than college, which I had to drop out of anyway, I can’t think of one single thing.
Temper lowers his glass and studies me, brown eyes filled with surprise and suspicion. “You want to go on a date with me? Why now?”
Shrugging, I lower my eyes to the counter before returning them to him. “Time for me to live a little.”
Being safe hasn’t gotten me anywhere in life.

Every year, the hot, tatted biker comes into Abbie’s bar, orders whiskey and asks her out. Every year, Abbie turns him down. After all, dating a man that goes by Temper seems like a really bad idea, no matter how attracted she is to him.

But this year is different. Abbie’s different. Older, wiser and tired of being stuck behind the bar in a sleepy town. This year, she’s ready for whatever adventure the sexy but sweet biker has in store for her.

Or so she thinks…until an elegant candlelit dinner ends with a dead body.

Now Abbie finds herself on the ride of her life, whisked away to the big city in Temper’s protective custody. She should be scared, but—despite his nickname—it’s clear the last thing Temper would ever do is hurt a hair on her head. And when danger catches up with them, Abbie soon realizes that holding tight to her man while straddling a Harley may be the safest place of all.

Bears Behaving Badly by MaryJanice Davidson book review

It’s been a while since I have picked up a MaryJanice Davidson book and I am glad that I did! It’s hard to describe a paranormal romance to people who do not usually read them because it might sound a bit weird ;) But here it goes…

Werebear shifter Annette Garsea is a social worker for shifter children. The Interspecies Placement Agency is hidden in a government building and all the people who work there are shifters. David Auberon is also a bear shifter but has not really worked with Annette until this case which involves two young werewolves. One who is an escape artist and one who won’t talk.

When Annette And David team up, there are obvious sparks. They are working under the assumption that neither one of them wants to start something, which leads to some hilariously awkward moments. But the chemistry is there. As the case goes on, this starts to turn into a mystery/action/suspense involving a shifter trafficking cartel. Because Annette is a social worker, part of her job is placing kids into foster homes, which is pretty emotional. Some of the secondary characters are Nadia, Oz, and Pat. They sure do bring a lot of color to the story. They are funny, fierce and loyal to Annette. Pat is gender fluid, Oz is her foster brother and Nadia is her co-worker and friend. The dialogue when all these characters are together is irreverent, funny, silly and full of naughtiness. The story is set in Minnesota, which made me chuckle because one does not imagine that to be a hot-bed of shifter activity.

This book will have you laughing out loud. The mystery is full of suspense, the romance is more of a slow burn throughout the book, but the action will have your heart pumping. It’s a light-hearted book that does tackle some serious social issues, but the dialogue is well done and totally off the wall. I’m glad that I picked it up and this book might just be a great choice to tune out the world and find yourself a part of the shifter community for a while.

Heiress for Hire by Madeline Hunter

I admit, I am a huge fan of Madeline Hunter’s historical romances. All of them :) Some are steamier than others. In my mind, the more the better. I think it’s super sexy and romantic to meet in the garden, have sex in the study or be seduced by candlelight. This new book does not disappoint. This is the first book in the A Duke’s Heiress series. The beginning of this book will hook you right in because Minerva Hepplewhite, meets Chase Radnor as he is breaking into her house. Instead of her fainting, she bashes him in the head and knocks him out. It’s a delicious twist right from the beginning. I think that from the first page, this book sets itself up into being a non-traditional historical romance. It’s not often you have a widow who has changed her name, started a new life with some of the former help and is starting a new business called Hepplewhite's Office of Discreet Inquiries. She is definitely not out husband-hunting.

Chase is the cousin of the new duke and does not stand to inherit anything from the former Duke of Hollingburgh. He is loyal to his family and wants to know why the former duke left his fortune to three seemingly random women. Chase describes himself as a gentleman who performs discreet inquiries. He has enough money to live comfortably and is not interested in fighting over inheritance money. There are several mysteries that Chase wants to unravel related to his family. He and Minerva keep crossing paths as they are conducting their own investigations. It becomes apparent to the reader that they are both chasing some of the same mysteries. Readers will love the verbal sparring and the intentional actions they both partake in to misdirect the others' inquiries. What will it take for them to start working together and sharing information?

In addition to pursuing the same case, there is a ton of sexual energy between the two. One might even cheer when they kiss for the first time. It’s so fun to be a part of the revealing of Minerva’s and Chase’s secrets, finding out why they do what they do, understanding their backgrounds. They obviously have a lot in common as they both consider themselves to be private investigators. There are several clues in the story that start alluding to the fact that Minerva came from an abusive marriage. She is damaged from that experience, but Chase is the perfect man to right a lot of wrongs in her life. I like that he doesn’t save her because she was doing just fine on her own, but they both realize that they make a good team.

This first book is a great start to the new series. The setting, the introduction of future main characters, the mystery that needs to be solved is all set up in this first book. As always, the historical details are so well researched. It makes you feel like you are there looking at the buildings, the estates, the attire, understanding the manners and societal expectations. The sexual tension is swoon worthy and I cannot wait for the next two books in this series. Do yourself a favor and get this book on April 28, 2020!
